When SOLAS approached Cobblestone Learning in early 2024, they had a vision: to raise awareness about unmet literacy needs in adults across Ireland. Their goal was to provide frontline workers and those who interact with the public the tools and sensitivity needed to recognise and address literacy challenges among service users. What started as a rough concept developed into a polished, interactive training course consisting of three modules. Each module, designed to be completed in 15-20 minutes, aimed to engage and inform through advanced video scenarios, interviews, and clear, accessible language.

The course is now live on the Adult Literacy for Life website and available to a broad audience of frontline workers, ensuring that those working in customer-facing roles have the knowledge and skills to respond effectively when literacy challenges arise.

The Challenge:

One of the more unique and welcome challenges of this project was that SOLAS came to us with only a rough idea of what they wanted. They were looking to Cobblestone Learning to help shape the content, the structure, and the entire learning experience. This provided an exciting opportunity to collaborate deeply with the client, offering creative freedom while also ensuring the training met the real needs of front-line workers.

The project included several video scenarios and interviews, requiring a full day of filming. Managing the tight schedules of everyone involved was tricky, with participants only available for brief time slots. Coordinating interviews and acting in scenarios on the same day posed a logistical puzzle, but with careful planning, everything came together smoothly.

One interview was conducted in Irish, adding a layer of complexity to post-production. We needed to ensure that the subtitling was accurate and that the message came across clearly for those watching in both English and Irish.

The Solution:

Crafting an engaging learning experience

We guided SOLAS through the process of turning their rough concept into a structured, engaging, and accessible e-learning course. The final modules were designed with simplicity and ease of use in mind, focusing on short, clear text in plain language to ensure the content was approachable to all. The use of video and interactive elements kept the learning engaging, while also emphasizing practical, real-world scenarios.

Thoughtful script development

To ensure authenticity, scenarios were scripted around the actual staff who volunteered to participate. These scripts were carefully developed based on initial conversations with SOLAS, ensuring that they accurately reflected the experiences of both literacy learners and the staff they encounter. The result was a set of relatable and impactful training scenarios that resonated with the target audience.

Video and audio scenarios

Cobblestone produced several high-quality video scenarios, focusing on health advice conversations, renewing a license and getting a refund; some common points of interaction where literacy challenges might arise. These videos were paired with interactive elements that allowed learners to engage with the material in a meaningful way. The audio scenarios were developed with Elevenlabs and brought additional depth to the training by simulating real-world conversations frontline workers might encounter.

Managing the language barrier

We successfully edited the Irish interview, ensuring that it not only fit seamlessly into the course but also provided accurate, clear closed captions for those unfamiliar with the language. This kept the course accessible to a wide audience while maintaining the integrity of the message.

The Result:

The final product, ‘Let’s talk about literacy’, was a three-module course that is as engaging as it is informative. By blending interviews, video scenarios, and plain language text, Cobblestone Learning helped SOLAS deliver an impactful training experience that raises awareness about adult literacy challenges in a practical, empathetic way.

The course now serves as a valuable tool for frontline workers, empowering them to recognise when someone may have literacy needs and giving them the tools to respond with empathy and understanding.

The course is hosted on the Adult Literacy for Life website and continues to support SOLAS in their mission to improve literacy outcomes across Ireland.
