The British Standards Institution (BSI) is the national standards body of the United Kingdom. For more than a century BSI has been at the forefront of establishing and promoting standards that enable businesses improve performance, reduce risk, and achieve sustainable growth.

As the recognized UK national standards body, BSI is a leading member of the International Standards Organization, ISO. In that role it promotes the adoption of ISO standards through sales, assessment, and training.

The goal from the outset was to build courses of the very highest quality, and this was achieved by incorporating a variety of rich interactive elements in a thoughtful manner. We really engage learners and help them retain what they’ve learnt.

BSI Academy Development Manager

The Challenge:

BSI offer training services across the UK, and also to International audiences, that see British Standards as global best practices. Training on ISO standards and certification is provided to two key audiences - commercial customers, and internal BSI staff.

This training was delivered in a classroom setting by qualified trainers or standard. Trainers were heavily booked and courses ran for a number of days to weeks, which was also a challenge for some students. In addition BSI wanted to capitalize on the commercial opportunity of offering training to students remotely and especially in international markets.

The Solution:

The learning goal

A key goal in offering this online training is to reach and engage customers that would otherwise not attend the classroom due to scheduling challenges or travel costs. This helps with BSI’s market penetration and has a positive impact on the overall revenue stream.

For customers planning to attend implementation or auditor training, it provides standardized preparation that then enables them to get maximum return from those classroom courses.

Similarly, an online offering helps BSI to meet its internal training requirements. Self-paced modularized eLearning means that staff can access standardized training at times that work with their busy schedules.

Because it is completely scalable, trainer resources are not impacted by patterns of demand. And its modular structure means that staff can learn or refresh specific topics in a timely manner, or even create their own training paths from the modules included.

A collaborative approach

Having decided to enhance its training capabilities with the addition of an online offering, BSI selected Cobblestone Learning as a trusted partner.

Our Cobblestone team lead by our lead instructional designer and project manager, worked on a daily basis with BSI’s project manager and subject matter experts at all stages of planning and developing the courseware.

ISO standards 14001, 9001, 50001 and 45001 were identified for the first phase of the project. In each case, two sets of courses were designed, the first one focused on the requirements of the standard, with a second covering key technical issues pertaining to the subject of the standard.

Courses are made up of modules typically ranging in duration from about 15 to 30 minutes of interactive eLearning. In total over 50 eLearning modules were created.

The type of courses created

In partnership with the team at BSI we developed an online offering which helped BSI to meet its internal training requirements.
